NZ's Flying Doctor Is NOT Very PC - But He Is A 'Healthy Bastard'
Dr Dave Baldwin is New Zealand's only Flying Doctor, but he's NOT very PC when it comes to talking about pilots (and other people's) health. There's a good reason for that, and it involves too many trips to the morgue...

Dr Dave Baldwin completed a medical degree at Otago University in Dunedin (New Zealand), and after completing his vocational training in General Practice he decided to specialise as a Cardiologist. However at the time he was supposed to sit his specialist exams he had a clash with the pilot exams he was also due to take—he ended up sitting the pilots exam rather than the medical ones.
In 1989 he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and after an officer training course became the Base Medical Officer at RNZAF Base Ohakea, where the RNZAF Strike Wing was based with its A-4 Skyhawk jets. This posting lead Dave to develop his subspecialty of Aviation Medicine with all the ancillary knowledge required to understand the medical issues associated with the aviation environment. Three years later he left the RNZAF and began developing the Bulls Medical Centre located in Bulls—a thriving rural town located next door to the Ohakea Air Force Base.
Since then he's used his Bulls base to develop the unique "Bulls Flying Doctor Service" (www.flyingdoctor.co.nz) from which he provides a mobile aviation medical service to pilots located in the remote areas of New Zealand. Receiving the CAA Directors Award for Safety in 2003, was a huge boost for the flying doctor service, and Dave continues to promote safe flying and excellence in Aviation Medicine.
If it’s true that laughter is the best medicine then Dr Dave’s ‘Healthy Bastards’ books are for everyone who wants to know more about his or her health with messages wrapped in humour—he takes the pain out of explaining all common health problems and major diseases that affect the average person.
